Rodney Crowell + Friends / Music City Texas Theater.

_________________________________________________________________________

Master songsmith, Rodney Crowell, put on a stellar show at Music City Texas Theater.  Joined by Steuart Smith (currently of the Eagles), Michael Rennie and Keio Stroud, Rodney shared songs from his new album “Tarpaper Sky” as well as some old favorites.  At the end of the evening, Rodney told a few stories and played “Pancho & Lefty” in honor of Townes Van Zandt’s birthday.  On the last chorus, he asked the crowd to lead acapella.  From stage left, I put my camera down and panned back at the house:

All the federales say

they could have had him any day

they only let him slip away

out of kindness I suppose

and as I felt that old familiar lump rising high in my throat, I realized that Townes Van Zandt is very, very much alive.
